2010 Lake Erie Islands Historical Museum Public Auction

Saturday, July 10, 2010, 4 p.m. at the Crescent Pavilion on the Park, downtown Put-in-Bay. Lots of great donations are already coming in. Viewing and sign-up begins at 1 p.m. Door prizes start at 2 p.m. Food and drink available from the Crescent Tavern on site. Silent auction and box lots also offered. Please join us for this afternoon of fun and support Put-in-Bay's historical museum.

This year we have furniture from the De Rivera Estate! Jose de Rivera was the founder of Put-in-Bay. He purchased the island in 1854 and laid out the roads, donated the waterfront park, first school property, first church property, cemetery and more. De Rivera helped the early settlers purchase their property by leasing them the land and after their grape crop was profitable, took payment on land contract. He made his fortune with a New York City fruit importing business and sent fruit to the island school children during the winter.

This auction includes more of the John Brown Jr.-T.B. Alexander Estate collection. John Brown Jr. was the oldest son of John Brown the Abolitionist. He moved to South Bass Island in 1861 and lived the rest of his life here, raising two children. His daughter Edith married actor T.B. Alexander, who was a Put-in-Bay Mayor and owned the Crescent Hotel.

We also are pleased to present several original artworks from island artist John L. Crites. Dr. Crites was a professor of zoology at Ohio State University and had a summer cottage on the island. His art is highly collectible.

We are still accepting items for our 2010 auction. If you would like to donate something that would make a good auction item, please call us at 419-285-2804. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and your donation is fully tax deductible within the limits of the Internal Revenue Code.
